While much of Waimakariri sits on flat plains, there are still areas where steep slopes, river terraces, and foothill terrain can experience landslides.

These are more likely after very heavy rain or significant earthquake shaking, especially where soil becomes saturated or the ground is naturally unstable.

Landslides can block roads, damage properties, and isolate rural communities. If you live or travel through hillside areas (such as near the foothills or elevated riverbanks), knowing the signs of slope movement can help keep you safe.
