Nominations are now open for the Community Service Awards, which celebrate the people who go above and beyond for their communities.
The annual awards recognise local volunteers who generously give their time, skills and energy to make a difference across the District. They have been a proud Waimakariri tradition for more than 30 years.
Nominations open on Wednesday 19 August and close on 6 September 2026.
Waimakariri District Mayor Dan Gordon says volunteering takes many forms across Waimakariri, from supporting a range of community groups and sports clubs, to public service, environmental projects and school PTAs.
Collectively, volunteers contribute around 1.5 million hours to the Waimakariri District each year.
“The awards are an opportunity to recognise people whose contribution often happens quietly, behind the scenes,” Mayor Gordon says.
“Across our District there are people who give an incredible amount of their time to helping others and strengthening their communities.
“Often, they don’t think what they are doing is particularly remarkable. They simply see something that needs doing and get on with it.”
Mayor Gordon says the community plays an important role in making sure those contributions are recognised.
“If you know someone who has given generously to their community, this is your opportunity to put their name forward. A nomination is a wonderful way to acknowledge the difference they have made.”
