Council welcomes Woodend Bypass funding and construction commitment

Waimakariri District Council welcomes the announcement today from the National Party regarding their commitment to fully funding and constructing the Woodend Bypass.

Mayor Dan Gordon said it was excellent to see the Prime Minister and National Party Leader Christopher Luxon standing in Woodend this morning to make this significant commitment.

Today’s announcement confirmed that $800 million has been allocated in the next Budget for the Bypass, with construction beginning next year if the party is re-elected.

Progress had already been made on the project including the completion of early enabling works such as the lagoon fill and associated site preparation.

Mayor Dan Gordon wrote to Minister Chris Bishop earlier this year seeking clarity on funding, delivery, and whether tolling will be part of the proposal, after the project progressed to Phase 2 without confirmed funding.

“Our community has advocated for the Woodend Bypass for many years. It remains a critical infrastructure priority to improve safety, reduce congestion and support North Canterbury’s economic growth. We’re pleased to see that progressing this project remains a priority for the Government.

“Our focus remains on strongly advocating for secured funding without tolling and a clear delivery timetable for our residents. We will continue to push for the project, working with whichever government is elected.”
