The bright lights of the Rangiora Town Hall’s Main Auditorium will once again play host to dancers and musicians from across the District as the Waimakariri arts community comes to together to reminisce on a century of memories.
Designed by architect Henry St Aubyn Murray and built by F Williamson of Christchurch, the Town Hall was officially opened by the Mayoress, Mrs R McIntosh, on 27 May 1926 and in the 100 years since, it’s been front row to thousands of recitals, performances, productions and "pictures".
Originally seating 600 people, the building came in at a final cost of £10,850 or $1.98m in today’s money.
Waimakariri District Mayor Dan Gordon says the Rangiora Town Hall has been at the heart of community life for generations, and its centenary is an opportunity to celebrate both its history and the people who continue to bring it to life.
“For 100 years, the Rangiora Town Hall has stood as one of our district's great assets. It is fitting we mark this milestone with the talented artists who continue to fill it with life today.
“As a council, we are proud of our role in caring for this building and ensuring it continues to serve the district for generations to come,” Mayor Gordon says.
Mayor Gordon, who chairs the Commemorative Committee, also acknowledged the work behind the commemoration.
“Their hard work has made this weekend of celebration possible.”
The Rangiora Town Hall Centenary Showcase promises to be a night of entertainment, music and just a hint of nostalgia with performances by the North Canterbury Musical Society, Rangiora RSA Brass Band, North Canterbury Academy of Music, Hartley School of Performing Arts, North Canterbury School of Dance, Jenna McKenzie School of Dance and many more.
Production Manager and Committee Member, Dale Hartley of Hartley School of Performing Arts says there’s something for everyone in the one-night only show.
“We’ve pulled together performers from all corners of the arts scene to pay tribute to this incredible venue in a variety show with a little 1920’s flare.”
“We’ve packed in as much as we can to give the audience a night that they will hopefully be talking about another 100 years from now,” says Dale.
To round out the celebrations, the Town Hall will open for a look behind the curtain on Sunday 6 September between 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm.
Visitors can experience a performer’s view of the Town Hall as they wander through dressing rooms and backstage areas not normally available to the public all while taking in the venue’s unique story through curated displays.
