Waimakariri Signs Welcoming Communities Commitment

On 11 June, Waimakariri District Council marked a significant milestone in its journey toward building a more inclusive and connected community.

Chief Executive Jeff Millwood and Mayor Dan Gordon formally signed the Welcoming Communities Statement of Commitment, achieving Stage 1 accreditation as a Committed Welcoming Community.

Waimakariri is one of the fastest-growing districts in New Zealand. With this growth comes increasing diversity, bringing new ideas, cultures, and experiences that enrich the district. It also brings an important responsibility to ensure that everyone who chooses to call Waimakariri home feels welcomed, supported, and connected.

The newly launched Welcoming Waimakariri Plan 2026–2029 sets out a clear roadmap to strengthen connections between newcomers and long-term residents. Developed through strong collaboration between Council and the community, the plan focuses on celebrating diversity, reducing barriers to belonging, and supporting migrants as they settle into the district.

For many newcomers, building a sense of belonging can take time, particularly when language or cultural differences create challenges. This initiative aims to bridge that gap, ensuring Waimakariri continues to be a place where people don’t just live, but truly belong.

The event also recognised the many individuals, organisations, and community groups whose dedication has helped shape this work. From Council staff and the Welcoming Communities Working Group to long-standing contributors from migrant support networks, the achievement reflects a shared commitment across the district.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Dan Gordon highlighted both the opportunity and responsibility that comes with growth:

“Growth brings new ideas, new skills, different cultures and experiences, and adds to the richness and vibrancy of our communities. But growth also brings responsibility — to ensure people arriving here feel welcomed, connected and supported as they establish their lives.”

He emphasised that while achieving accreditation is an important milestone, it is only the beginning:

“At its heart, this work is about people… ultimately, it is about ensuring Waimakariri continues to be a place where people don’t just live — they belong.”

The signing of the Statement of Commitment signals Council’s ongoing dedication to fostering inclusive, resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to contribute and thrive. Work will now continue to deliver on the actions set out in the Welcoming Waimakariri Plan, ensuring the district remains a place where diversity is celebrated and belonging is at the heart of community life.
