The sod has officially been turned on the highly anticipated Pegasus Community Centre.
With construction to begin in mid-October, Amalgamated Builders, a South Island owned and operated firm, were awarded the project after a thorough tender process.
“It’s really exciting to have finally broken ground on this project,” says Mayor Elect Dan Gordon.
“Council made provision for the Pegasus Community Centre in 2018 as part of the Long Term Plan, so to be at the point is really satisfying.
We had some great feedback on the proposed design, while it is a functional building it is one that has been well considered, and the architects have designed a building that our community can be proud of it also sits in a stunning position next to the lake.
We’re confident that this centre will be a fantastic community asset, and well utilised.”
Former Woodend-Sefton Community Board Chair and now newly elected Councillor, Shona Powell says the community are excited the process will soon begin.
“The area has grown a lot over recent years, and the demand for a building where people can come together, hold events, and celebrate in greater numbers, has grown at the same time. The community have been at the forefront, driving this project forward over many years so this is a testament to their advocacy and efforts.
This building will become a real ‘heart’ of the community and we’re all very excited progress is soon to start.”
The contract covers the construction of a new 400m2 community facility on Pegasus Main Street with associated carparking, landscaping and infrastructure.
Renowned full-service design practice Ignite Architects carried out the design work with a focus on a multi-use facility, including space to cater for large events such as conferences, fundraisers, balls and more.
A 31 car parking lot adjacent to the centre ensures easy accessibility, including 2 accessible parking spaces and ten cycle parks.
“This is a modern, state of the art facility that will serve the wider Pegasus community for decades to come.”
Construction is expected to be complete in 2026.
Funding was set aside in the 2018-28 Long Term plan for the Pegasus Community Centre project.
