A new online resource has launched aimed at keeping residents informed about significant changes coming to local government.
This initiative comes as the coalition Government rolls out what are considered the most substantial reforms in a generation, affecting everything from planning and infrastructure to environmental management and public services
Key areas of focus for Waimakariri include:
- Rates capping
- Simplifying Local Government
- Resource Management Act (RMA) reform
- Development Levies
- Emergency Management Bill
- Local Government (Systems Improvements) Bill
"These reforms all interact, and we will work carefully to understand any potential impacts on our community in terms of service provision as well as cost," says Chief Executive Jeff Millward.
"Reform is far from something councils wish to avoid – in fact the sector has been calling for this for years. We look forward to working collaboratively with central government on these changes.
"This is an exciting opportunity to improve how local government delivers planning, infrastructure, environmental management and public services to support our districts future prosperity.Although we agree at a high level on change being required, we are wary some of the proposals may not be in the best interests of our community and will be responding with our thoughts on changes which we do not see as benefiting Waimakariri."
A detailed timeline on the site outlines the progression of these reforms, starting with consultations opening in early 2026 on rates capping, development levies, and structural changes to local government.
Residents can expect government decisions by March, with legislation advancing through mid-2026 and implementation phases extending into 2027 and beyond, including the establishment of Combined Territories Boards and full rollout of the new Resource Management Act system by 2029.
The council is committed to maintaining local accountability amid these shifts and encourages community involvement.
