The Oxford Water Supply Renewal project, along Main Street from Woodside Road to High Street, is part of Council’s ongoing programme to upgrade ageing water infrastructure and maintain a reliable level of service.
The existing 150mm asbestos cement (AC) water main has reached the end of its serviceable life and is no longer suitable to support current demand or anticipated future growth in the area.
We’re replacing the existing main with a larger capacity 200mm pipeline to improve network performance, reduce the risk of failures, and enhance supply resilience. In addition, the installation of a 63mm rider main will support service level requirements by improving connectivity and operational flexibility within the network.
The work will include
- Installation of a new 200mm water main along Main Street from Woodside Road to High Street.
- Installation of a 63mm rider main.
- Installation of a new 100mm water main and 25mm rider main along Cheapside Street from Main Street intersection to 12 Cheapside Street.
- Installation of a new 100mm water main along Harewood Road from Main Street intersection to 4 Harewood Road.
- Connection of the new water main to the existing network at tie-in locations.
- Installation and/or upgrade of associated fittings including valves, hydrants, and service connections.
- Reinstatement of road surfaces, berms, and footpaths affected by the works.
Timing of work
Council is currently in the investigation and design phase of the project. This includes site investigations, concept development, and detailed design, along with preparation of tender documentation.
Construction is currently anticipated to commence in the 2027/28 financial year, subject to completion of design, approvals, and contractor procurement. The duration of construction will be confirmed following detailed design but is expected to be staged to minimise disruption to residents, businesses, and road users.
Further updates, including more specific timeframes and staging details, will be provided closer to the construction start date.
How the work may affect you
During the investigation phase, you may notice survey crews and field staff working within the project area to assess site conditions and gather information to inform the design. This may include activities such as topographical surveys, service location, and minor potholing works. These activities are generally short-term and are not expected to cause significant disruption.
Traffic impacts
Traffic management will be in place throughout both the investigation and construction phases to ensure the safety of road users and site personnel. During the investigation phase, there may be short-term traffic controls in place while survey crews and service investigations are undertaken.
