We’re installing traffic lights at the intersection of Island Road and Ohoka Road.

The traffic signals at Ohoka Road/Island Road are now operational.


29 May 2024

The Traffic Signals at Island Road / Ohoka Road are due to be tested tommorow morning (30 May 2024) around 9am. If everything runs well no minor works are required then they are likely to be officially commissioned. If minor works are still required then they are likely to be commissioned on Tuesday 4 June 2024.


13 May 2024

The closure of Island Road is changing back to the south side of Ohoka Road next week to finish the surfacing works, road marking and sign installations.

There will be a road closure on Island Road (South) from Tuesday 2 April to Friday 5 April. This closure is necessary to allow for sealing work on the new traffic signals being installed at the intersection of Island Road and Ohoka Road.

  • Closure Dates: Tuesday 2 April to Friday 5 April
  • Backup Dates: Saturday 6 April and Sunday 7 April (in case of bad weather or unexpected events)

Additional Information:

  • Left turns will not be allowed from the SH1 Ohoka Road off-ramp during off-peak hours (approximately 9am to 2pm) on Tuesday 2 April only.

The intersection has been flagged as high risk due to the increasing traffic volumes, wait times and the potential for serious crashes.

Area of Works - Island/ Ohoka Rd Intersection

The work will start on 26 February and include:
- Installing traffic lights
- Drainage improvements
- Structural resurfacing including raising the intersection to help reduce speeds
There will be some traffic impacts which we will communicate in advance as the project progresses. We will try to minimise any delays.

We expect the project to be completed by the end of May 2024.
