As part of the Waimakariri District Council Maintenance Contract, our contractor CORDE will be carrying out drainage improvements on Highfield Lane.
We are carrying out routine drainage maintenance and improvement works. These works are designed to help ensure that water flows properly into the correct channels, reducing ponding and improving overall drainage. This helps prevent water build-up and supports safer road conditions.
The work will include
- Cleaning and regrading swales in the berms, both sides of the laneway
- Clearing all inlets and outlets of driveway access culverts
- Jetting of all accessway culverts (will be completed before the drainage improvements commence)
- Cleaning out the sumps at the head of the cul-de-sac
- Constructing an asphalt ‘V’ channel on the north at the head of the cul-de-sac to improve water flow to the swale in the berm
- Reshaping a small area of the road on the Southern side at the head of the cul-de-sac head to help direct water to the swale.
Timing of work
Works are due to commence Monday 11 August, weather permitting.
How the work may affect you
- A narrowed roadway will occur during swale regrading and sump cleaning
- Minor delays may be experienced when entering or exiting properties due to machinery
- Traffic Management will be onsite to help road users and pedestrians as required, and ‘Stop/Go’ operations will be in place for vehicles entering or exiting the work site.

Noise and dirt
Road work is a noisy, dirty business — but please bear with us. We will be doing all we can to minimise the impact on your home/business. Your cooperation and patience will help us get the job done as quickly as possible. All work will be carried out between the stated hours and over week days only to help minimise the impact on the community.
Easy does it
Bitumen, concrete and other road repair materials require a bit of care after they are applied. Please treat all new surfaces with extra care following the completion of this project.
Other projects for Highfield Lane
A workshop was held with the Utilities and Roading Committee (sub-committee of Council) about the concerns raised in relation to Highfield Lane in July, and as part of this workshop staff outlined a number of steps that would be taken. These included:
- Completing drainage maintenance works within the laneway (as outlined above)
- Undertaking consultation on No Stopping in the cul-de-sac (underway). A report is going to the Rangiora-Ashley Community Board in August on this matter, and will then go not the Utilities and Roading Committee.
- Reviewing and updating prioritisation for the New Footpath Programme (this will be carried out over the next three months)
- Bringing a report back to Utilities and Roading Committee once the New Footpath Programme update is complete.
Staff noted that there is a small amount of funding which is unallocated with the New Footpath Programme budget for current 2025/26 financial year, and that consideration could be given as to whether this be used to construct a footpath along the berm in Highfield Lane. This will require formal approval by the Utilities and Roading Committee via a report. The workshop was not a decision making meeting, however there did appear to be support around the table for this approach. As such staff will progress the prioritisation update and prepare a further report.
Should formal approval be given by the Utilities and Roading Committee, then it is possible construction could be undertaken in the first quarter of 2026.
Reports to Community Boards and Committees can be found on Council’s website.
Thank you for your patience while we complete this work. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.
