Tropical Cyclone Gita Updates

Tropical Cyclone Gita is expected to bring severe weather to many parts of New Zealand, with the centre of the cyclone passing over the upper South Island. Potential for heaving rain of accumulated 150 to 200mm with possible peak intensities of 20 to 30mm/hr is expected in Canterbury High Country and foothill areas. Staff is working diligently to ensure continuity of services, public safety, and emergency management if required.

Weather Related Response Update

Crews continued to ensure our roads and bridges are safe for travel throughout the District. Here's the latest updated:

  • Damage is being assessed throughout the District and bridges are being inspected.
  • Bridge debri cleanup operations have been identified and will commence Friday, 23 February.
  • ALL fords remain closed.
  • Pavements are saturated, potholes will develop quickly throughout network in sealed and unsealed alike. The public's patience is appreciated.
  • Broad Road is now open.
  • Lees Valley is open.
  • Patersons Road is now open.

Cyclone Gita – Council EOC Closes

This is the final update for the evening. With the rain steadily easing off, and expected to continue to lighten heading into tomorrow, the decision has been made to close down Council’s Emergency Operations Centre.
