Flaxton Road Roundabout and Upgrade Underway

The upgrade of Flaxton Road through the Southbrook industrial area and construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Flaxton and Fernside Roads has now begun.

This is an exciting project that will provide a safe intersection and reinforce Southbrook as a main entrance to Rangiora.

“These projects will address many safety issues as well as cater for the increasing amount of traffic using Flaxton, Fernside and Townsend Roads to access west Rangiora,” says Don Young, Senior Engineering Advisor.

The work involves new kerbs, parking bays, footpaths as well as the roundabout itself which will provide a better layout to suit the amount of traffic using the road.

This will cause delays as this is a busy route into Rangiora and the Council encourages drivers to think about using alternative routes such as Lineside Road.

To allow the work to be completed Flaxton Road, between Fernside Road and Kingsford Smith Drive, will be closed to northbound traffic from Monday 25 January. Traffic will be diverted via Townsend Road and South Belt and a temporary 30km/h speed limit will be in place.

Work will be completed in stages through to May 2021 with final asphalt sealing later in the year.

Traffic impacts:

  • From Monday 25 January until May 2021 during the roundabout construction, traffic will be one-way southbound on Flaxton Road between Kingsford Smith Drive and Fernside Road.  A detour will be in place for northbound traffic (refer map below).
  • Both traffic lanes on Flaxton Road between Lineside Road and Kingsford Smith Drive will be open during the work. A temporary 30km/h speed limit will be in place.
  • For visitors to the Southbrook Resource Recovery Park, access will only be available from Southbrook Road due to the closure of the northbound lane between Flaxton Road and Kingsford Smith Drive.

Access to businesses will be available throughout the work.
