Community Spaces at Alert Level 2

Alert Level 2 will see a lot more of our places and spaces open for use by the public including playgrounds, skate parks, dog parks, tennis courts, basketball courts, sports areas and boat ramps.

Grant MacLeod, Greenspace Manager says, “We know that people have been looking forward to this new freedom after lockdown, especially parents, children and dog owners. But we ask you to be sensible – keep your distance and practice safe hygiene. If a playground or dog park looks too busy then come back later.” 20200513 - Kids in Park

Our contractors have been working around the District cleaning playgrounds and entry points to dog park and courts as well as removing danger tape. There may be a few more to do over the weekend so please be patient.  Public toilets are open too but our water fountains and BBQs remain closed.

Town Hall Cinemas is open and movies are showing, the meeting areas in the building remain closed for public bookings.

Community Facilities, like community halls, remain closed for bookings until 23 May when we will review our approach.

Simon Kong, Community Facilities Coordinator says, “The delay in opening to public will give us time to work with individual users groups around contact tracing, set up changes in facilities to meet Alert Level 2 requirements and move or update bookings as needed.”

We are continuing with standard building maintenance programs on all our buildings so you will see contractors out and about.

Use of community facilities will look different over the coming months. This will continue to impact some users or activities. We are keen to work with the community to ensure that everyone feels safe, supported and confident when using these facilities.  Staff will continue to liaise with community groups as we learn more about COVID guidelines and rules around use of the public spaces change.
