Detours for Oxford Road as Improvement Work Begins

Development of a semi-rural stretch of Oxford Road, between Westpark Boulevard and Charles Upham Drive starts soon, which will see pedestrian linkages between the new subdivision and Charles Upham Retirement Village improved.

View of Oxford Road from Charles Upham Drive looking westMajor work will start on Monday 11 November following minor works earlier this year, and in preparation for the project getting underway, investigation works will be carried out on Thursday and Friday, bringing detours to west and eastbound traffic.

Contractors will begin work on the south side of Oxford Road, bringing detours for westbound traffic via Lehmans Road, Johns Road and Plaskett Road. When they move to the north side of Oxford Road, eastbound traffic will be detoured the reverse.

Providing the rain stays away, all investigation work should be completed by Friday evening. Detours will be removed each day once work is completed.

The road improvements include various works to create a road environment that makes it obvious to motorists they are entering an urban area, and to slow down. It will also make improvements for pedestrians through the busy intersection.

The first portion of work, between Westpark Boulevard and Charles Upham Drive, will be completed in February 2020. Contractors will then move to the intersection of Oxford Road and Lehmans Road to upgrade a stormwater culvert, as well as making minor improvements to the intersection layout on Lehmans Road.

Stage two works include:

  • New kerb and channel along the northern side of Oxford Road
  • Landscaped ‘build-outs’ to make an attractive entrance to the Rangiora township from the west
  • New footpaths to provide a connection for residents of West Park to the existing footpath east of Charles Upham Drive
  • Installation of two pedestrian refuge islands to help people cross Oxford Road.  One located west of Charles Upham Drive, and one located east of Westpark Boulevard
  • Intersection ‘splitter islands’ will be installed on both sides of Charles Upham Drive and Acacia Avenue at the intersection of Oxford Road
  • Resurfacing of Oxford Road at the intersection of Charles Upham Drive.
  • Extension of street lighting on the southern side of Oxford Road, as far as Westpark Boulevard.

The Council thanks all road users for their patience while this work is completed.
