Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) have declared a Prohibited Fire Season for Waimakariri and areas across Canterbury as the continuing hot and dry weather increases the fire risk.
From midnight Wednesday 20 February, all fires will be prohibited in Waimakariri, Selwyn and Hurunui Districts. Christchurch City is already in a Prohibited Fire Season.
Any fire permits issued during a restricted fire season are suspended from the start of the prohibited fire season.
Gas barbecues however can still be used.
Fire authorities are also asking those who have had fires in recent days to check that they're properly extinguished. Bonfires have been known to reignite up to a month after initially being put out.
