April Council Meeting Recap

The Waimakariri District Council April meeting started with a moment’s silence for a former colleague.  Alan McRobie served as a councillor in the Waimakariri between 2001 and 2007 and passed away recently; several councillors took the opportunity to share their memories of Alan and pay their respects.

The Council was then presented with a variety of reports.  The April update for the Earthquake Infrastructure Recovery Programme showed that $23,000,000 from a budget of approximately $41,124,000 had been spent on the capital component of recovery works.  44 of the 50 projects in the programme have been completed with two more commencing construction in April 2017.

Funding of $56,600 was approved for the installation of a new street camera surveillance system in Kaiapoi.  A separate report will be prepared to address the need for a similar system in Rangiora.

$13,000 was approved for the Loburn Wastewater Treatment Plant urgent works, and council approved the Fernside development contribution being redefined to be a subset of the Mandeville water development contribution.  Council also received a report on the Ashley rural Water Supply review.

A small amendment was made to a policy regarding the use of drones on council parks, but generally, the policy was agreed to be working well and will be reviewed again in March 2020.  The policy currently allows remotely controlled aircraft to be flow in 11 of the district’s biggest parks with a few conditions.

A customer satisfaction survey carried out in 2016 was presented to council. It was noted that satisfaction with the overall performance of the Council had significantly increased from 76% of respondents in 2013 to 85% of respondents in 2016.

The council also looked towards Anzac Day on April 25, and both Mayor and councilors will be attending services around the district.  The next Council meeting is Tuesday 2 May.
