Ticket Sales Booming as Waimakariri Catches Hockey Fever

The Waimakariri District is buzzing, as excitement leading up to this weekend’s two international Hockey tests reaches fever pitch.  Ticket sales are strong and event organisers are confident of large crowd to cheer on the home side: Vantage Black Sticks Women.

The team, currently ranked 5th in the world, will be playing against USA who are ranked just behind them in 6th place.  The games will be hosted on the recently finished Olympic-standard turf at Waimakariri Hockey Stadium.

Councillor Robbie Brine manages the council’s Greenspace Portfolio and says, “We are greatly looking forward to watching the Black Sticks play on our brand new turf this weekend.  We’ve put a lot of work into ensuring we have a world-class facility and to already have an elite-level international event hosted right here in Rangiora, is a major coup for the entire district."

The Black Sticks are also enthusiastic about visiting the district and expect to be receiving plenty of local support.

Mayor David Ayers Cuts RibbonHockey New Zealand CEO, Ian Francis stated, “Hockey New Zealand is very exciting to be bringing international hockey to Rangiora and North Canterbury for the first time ever, and we look forward to a great turn out from the local community to see the Vantage Black Sticks Women play on the brand new turf.”

And it won’t just be the locals attending; a Chinese delegation currently visiting from our sister district of Enshi, China are also heading along to enjoy the day.

The new $2m water-based turf was officially opened in February by Mayor David Ayers and is the same surface as played on at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. It allows competition-level hockey to be hosted locally, previously players had to travel into Christchurch to compete.

“The turf is a superb community asset, not just for the local hockey players but the whole Canterbury hockey community," says Rod Templeton Chief Executive of Canterbury Hockey.

Tickets for the game start at $5, are available from the Hockey NZ website. There will also be gate sales on match day.
