Honda Forest Opens with Community Planting Day

The Honda Forest has been officially opened by Mayor David Ayers and Managing Director of Honda NZ, Nobuya Sonada.

Dozens of dedicated souls braved the cold for the opening and community planting with nearly 700 trees planted. Mayor David Ayers commented, “There was a great community feel and it was wonderful to see so many people lend a helping hand.”

The opening was commemorated with an unveiling of a plaque mounted on a large basalt boulder. Seemingly out of place, this unusual volcanic rock was found in the Regeneration area, and following a tidy-up, was given a new lease on life with the Honda Forest plaque mounted on it.

Honda’s generous donation has enabled the development, planting and ongoing maintenance of this legacy project.

Approximately 15,000 more seedlings will be planted in stages over the next three years.

Future planting days will be advertised so everyone can come and play a part in the forest restoration of the former red zone land.
