Opened in 1926, the Rangiora Town Hall is a notable historic building in the Waimakariri District. The building received Landmarks heritage recognition at a ceremony on 27 May 2010. It is located in a prominent position at the western end of Rangiora town centre on the corner of High and King Streets. The hall was closed in 2012 for seismic strengthening and building extensions. The refurbished and restored Rangiora Town Hall reopened on Saturday 7 March 2015 at 2 pm. View a video of the opening ceremony on YouTube.
The existing auditorium was retained and upgraded with a new orchestra pit and audience seating. The auditorium is divided into ground floor and upper balcony levels, with a total of 361 fixed seats. There is an additional 150-seat smaller theatre stage alongside, which is suitable for dance performance and can also be used as a cinema. There is also a new cinema complex with two 23-seat state-of-the-art digital cinemas.
Additional facilities include four meeting rooms, a function room, a green room, changing rooms for performers, toilets, casual seating and tables in the main foyer, and a kitchenette.
Off-street car parking is available behind the hall.
The Town Hall Cinemas are operated by Jeremy Stewart, the operator of the successful Alice Cinematheque in Christchurch. The Town Hall Cinemas are open every day except Christmas Day from 10 am to 10.30 pm. Visit the Town Hall Cinemas website to find out more about the cinemas and what movies are screening.
