We’ve reviewed our Waste Management Minimisation Plan, and have looked at the ways our district could manage rubbish in the future. We want to get serious about reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill. We would like to know if you think we should provide more choices like rubbish bins and organics/greenwaste bins.
Did you know that approximately 61% of your kerbside rubbish is compostable while 9% is recyclable? That makes up a whopping 27% of all rubbish sent to landfill from the Southbrook Resource Recovery Park!
If we keep doing the same things we’re doing now, the amount of waste being sent to landfill will continue to grow. An organics bin kerbside collection service is the best solution for reducing the total amount of rubbish going to landfill, but it comes at a cost.
A rubbish bin won’t have the same problems with being ripped open by cats and dogs as a bag does, and an automated bin collection reduces the risk of injury to the collector by around 90% compared to a manual bag collection.
Why the different options?
Last time we talked about kerbside collections you asked for a more flexible kerbside service, so that’s what we’re offering!
In 2011, you told us that the increase in rates for the proposed kerbside service would disadvantage those on a fixed income, and homes producing low waste.
We’ve come up with a range of flexible options with varying costs so you will be able to choose bin sizes that work for you and your household. In all of the options you can stick with your current recycling bin and Council rubbish bags with no change in rates.
Using our online calculator, you can determine estimated rates for the option that would suit your household, then tell us how many service choices options we should offer households by selecting A, B or C. It’s that simple!
Environmental Benefit:
This option is what we currently provide, paid for by a fixed rate of $86 for the recycling bin collection service and $3 per rubbish bag used. This option doesn’t decrease the amount of compostable waste going to landfill in our District. People have alternatives for composting their food and garden waste.

For those who prefer to remain with the current service, you can also choose to continue using rubbish bags with options B or C. Rubbish bags have a 60L capacity. For example:
This option doesn’t reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, doesn’t reduce the ‘nuisance’ from cats & dogs ripping the bags or reduce the injury risk to the collector. It has the least impact private waste collectors’ businesses out of the three options.
While this option doesn’t decrease the amount of compostable waste going to landfill in our District, the addition of the rubbish bin provides convenience and reduces injury to collectors by about 90%. People still have alternatives for composting their food and garden waste. This option also allows you the choice of continuing to use WDC rubbish bags.

Rubbish bags have a 60L capacity. For example:
This option reduces the amount of waste going to landfill by about 2%, reduces the ‘nuisance’ from cats & dogs ripping the bags and reduces the injury risk to the collector. It will have some impact on private waste collectors’ businesses. Council will not provide a 240L rubbish bin because we want to encourage people to reduce waste.
With the addition of the organic bin (mixed food and garden waste), this is the best solution to reduce rubbish from going to the landfill.
You can choose to keep using Council rubbish bags in this option as well, although your rubbish collection would change from weekly to fortnightly. That’s because this removes compostable kitchen (the ‘yuck’ factor) and green waste (the bulky stuff) from the rubbish.

This option reduces the amount of waste going to landfill by about 14%, reduces the ‘nuisance’ from cats & dogs ripping the bags and reduces the injury risk to the collector. It will have the most impact on private waste collectors’ businesses of the 3 options. Council will not provide a 240L rubbish bin because we want to encourage people to reduce waste.
The Council will contact people who want to be heard to confirm a date and time with them.
