Waikuku's New 'Whales' Paddling Pool to Open Next Month
Friday, 21 September 2012
Work on the new Waikuku Beach Paddling Pool will be completed early next month and the pool is scheduled to be opened on Labour weekend.
The Woodend-Ashley Community Board earlier this month gave the go ahead for final landscaping improvements, including levelling, creating pathways, soft fall matting around the old whale, grassing of the pool surrounds, some minor planting and a shade sail installation.
The original Waikuku Beach Paddling Pool suffered significant damage during the September and February earthquakes of 2010/2011 and the Council called on the views of the Waikuku community including Waikuku School and the Woodend-Ashley Community Board in the new construction.
Consultation with the community showed the popularity of the ‘whale’ theme in the previous paddling pool and a desire to incorporate the concrete whale from the original paddling pool in the new design. As a consequence of that, the theme was carried forward and expanded in the new paddling pool construction and the old concrete whale is being renovated and has become part of the landscaping surrounding the new pool, which also carries the whale theme through.
The fully finished pool will feature a new ‘spraying whale’ inside the pool along with three floor sprays and a painted whale with a fresh water shower will adorn the western wall of the plant room.
The new pool will meet New Zealand standards for pool design and water treatment and will, when complete, have attractive surrounds suitable for families to gather and picnic.
