Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre Repairs Start Soon

Friday, 24 August 2012

The chequered history of the earthquake damaged Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre is due to take a significant step forward from Monday 3 September as work on its repair begins.

The contract for the repairs, which will involve re-roofing and rebuilding the outside walls of the complex, has been awarded to Higgs Construction Ltd.

The aquatic centre was closed immediately after the September 2010 earthquake with comparatively minor damage caused to ducting.  It reopened in December 2010. However, the centre was closed again after the February earthquake last year with major damage to the roof structure – damage which made the facility unusable.

Since then significant engineering investigation and design work has been carried out in conjunction with project engineers, architects and insurers. Incorporated into the design are some improvements to the changing rooms and the entranceway.

In June this year the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust, announced a $1.1 million grant towards the repair and rebuild of the Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre. The total cost of the repair project comes to $4.3 million with the vast majority of that covered by the grant and insurance.

The work begins on Monday 3 September and is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, 2013.
