Council Accepts Tender for Kaiapoi Town Centre Repairs and Improvements
Monday, 10 September 2012
At its monthly meeting last week the Waimakariri District Council approved the acceptance of a tender from City Care Ltd for earthquake repairs and improvements in the Kaiapoi Town Centre, the Williams Street bridge and north of the bridge.
Council staff have been working with the Kaiapoi Community Board to develop a street layout and landscape plan for Williams Street, including the bridge and the area to its north. The plans were approved by the community board in June.
Although Williams Street north of the bridge and Charles Street suffered substantial damage in the 2010 earthquake, only temporary repairs have been undertaken to date, pending development of town centre plans and decisions around red zone areas.
The work will be carried out in two stages, the first stage concentrating on Charles Street and Davie Street (from Charles Street to Sewell Street), and the second stage focussing on Williams Street itself and Smith Street (from Charles Street to Sewell Street).
The project will involve water main and sewer mains replacement, kerbing and channelling replacement, some road reconstruction, footpath repairs in Charles Street and street layout and landscape improvements associated with the town centre upgrade.
Roading manager Ken Stevenson says a start date has not yet been finalised. “We’re waiting on a firm start date from City Care and we’re very keen to get the project under way as soon as possible”, he said.
The project is expected to be completed by late May, 2013.
