Waimakariri District Council is hosting an event for the
district’s furriest residents.
On Sunday 11 March in the
afternoon, the Oxford Community Aquatic Centre will be closed to humans, and
instead puppies will take the plunge.
It’s called the Oxford Doggy Pool
Party, and Waimakariri Aquatic Facilities Manager, Matt Greenwood, says it’s
been a popular request.
“Of course we’re lucky here in
Waimakariri to have some many good swimming spots for our pets, but there’s
something great about being able to get all sorts of dogs together for a big
pool party. We’ve been asked about holding this event quite a few times
and we’re really looking forward to the chaos!”
The pool party is scheduled for
the last day of the season, meaning any leftover fur or doggy messes will be
“Afterwards the water will be chemically treated, the pool vacuumed and
thoroughly cleaned. It’s standard maintenance we do to prepare for the
winter months and that allows us to host this event without creating a lot of
extra work for our staff,” explained Matt Greenwood.
The entry fee is $5 per pooch, and
as well as the swimming, there will be plenty of balls to play with, spot
prizes and information on Council dog registration & canine health.
And with the event already spreading quickly on social media, it may be “fur-st
in, fur-st served”!
