Major change in Ohoka Road-Island Road Intersection Layout from Next Week

Published: 11-Jan-2018

From Monday traffic travelling on Ohoka Road across Island Road will have right of way, with Island Road traffic being required to stop and give way to Ohoka Road traffic.

The new arterial road in West Kaiapoi will open from 10.30am on Monday 15 January, changing the way drivers use the Ohoka Road/Island Road intersection.

The year-long roading project involved the construction of a new road from the Ohoka Road off-ramp, around onto Butchers Road and joining back onto Island Road near Mill Road, and two bridges crossing the Kaiapoi River and Silverstream. The new road will divert traffic away from the new residential area of Silverstream and provide a key link to west Rangiora and Southbrook. Traffic Management Signage warning motorists of New Road Layout

Council’s Roading Manager Ken Stevenson says “As well as providing a link through to west Rangiora and Southbrook, the new road will address safety issues at the intersection of Ohoka Road/Island Road and Cosgrove Road.

A key change we want people to be aware of is that Ohoka Road and the new arterial road traffic will have priority over Island Road. This is a significant change that motorists need to be aware of, and we’re asking drivers to take extra care when travelling through the intersection following this change”.

Another change is that Island Road, between Mill Road and Adderley Terrace will be closed permanently to through traffic from Monday 15 January, as the new arterial road forms the main link through to Kaiapoi. Adderley Terrace traffic heading westward to Ohoka or Rangiora will be able to access the new arterial road via Silverstream Boulevard and Hayson Drive.

Motorists will notice work continuing around the Mill Road intersection and the intersection of Island Road and the new arterial road as contractors work to complete road sealing from Monday 15 January until Wednesday 31 January. Stop/go traffic management will be in place at both locations during the day - please expect minor delays. Mill Road will be temporarily closed until Wednesday 31 January. “Council extends its thanks to residents surrounding the new arterial road who have endured on-going construction work and detours. Their support has been appreciated” says Ken.
