The Waimakariri Migrants and Newcomers Group held a successful Cultural Diversity Event last Sunday in Kaiapoi.  Around 120 people attended from a range of countries and across all age groups.  The event was part of wider programme supported by the Waimakariri District Council Community Development Team.

Migrants and newcomers represented countries from all round the globe including Australia, Bahrain, Fiji, Hong Kong, Hungary, Peru, The Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, Tonga, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Zambia. 20170901 - Cultural Diversity

In addition, people came from Christchurch and across the district including Ashley, Balcairn, Christchurch, Kaiapoi, Oxford, Pegasus, Pines Beach, Rangiora and Tuahiwi.

Attendees were asked a number of questions about their experience as a migrant or newcomer.  Feedback received was wide and varied with 78% of those surveyed saying that they felt welcomed and supported in New Zealand.  When asked what more could be done to help them those surveyed indicated that help with finding employment, getting more involved in community life and more cultural diversity events would be great.

Attendees were also asked if the cultural diversity event could be improved and the response was overwhelmingly positive with people asking for more events and to invite more people to come along.   Denise Wiggins, Community Development Facilitator says “This was an amazing event all about embracing diversity in our community.  It was a great to see old and young enjoying each other’s company and taking the time to connect with each other.”
