New Pegasus Community Centre Already a Hit

The centre, which occupies the premises formerly tenanted by the local pharmacy, had been in the pipeline since December 2015, being a pet project of the active Pegasus Resident’s Association group.

With council support, a plan was hatched to use one of the portacom buildings previously located at council’s Rangiora Service Centre, although a switch was later made, with the vacated pharmacy building taking its place.

The start of the council lease on the building allowed the fit out to start, with the work which began on March 20, now nearing its conclusion with the centre open for ‘business’.

The facility has got off to a brisk start, kicking off with a Neighbourhood Support and Police information evening (pictured) last month.

A number of other locally based organisations and activities have since taken advantage of the new facility, which will host its maiden community board meeting tonight when the Woodend-Sefton board gathers at the centre.

Appropriately one of the first groups to hold a meeting at the centre was the Pegasus Resident’s Group itself.

Having been the driving force behind the centre, the group has also taken on the responsibility of managing the facility on the council’s behalf.

Although already in use, further work is planned, including the additions of an information centre and a drop-in area.

The centre is available for public hire at the cost of $25 per hour for commercial activities/meetings; $10 per hour for casual private, community social or government-related events; and $6 per hour for community group meetings and activities such as exercise classes.
