The graduates of last year’s Youth In Emergency Services programme
came together last weekend when they were formally recognised by the Mayors of
the Waimakariri, Hurunui and Selwyn Districts.
The group gathered at
Kaiapoi High Schools Cultural Centre, Te Kōhiko, to celebrate their involvement
at the YES camp.
Youth from across the three Districts were involved in last
year’s programme, participating in the five-day educational camp, which is
designed to provide a general introduction to emergency service operations
across the eight participating organisations.

At the conclusion of the week, the teenagers were given
three months practical experience volunteering at a service of their choice.

It had allowed him to gain new skills while also making a number of new
Rochelle Faimalo of Hurunui said the benefits of the camp experience,
and the education the participants had gained within it, was highlighted after
last year’s earthquakes, which impacted significantly on her District.
Faimalo said she took a number of calls from fellow YES camp attendees
following the quakes asking what they could do to help.
The participants’ achievement in graduating from the programme,
following their three months of volunteer work with emergency services, was
acknowledged at last Sunday’s ceremony.
They were presented with certificates by their District Mayors: David
Ayres, Sam Broughton (Selwyn) and Winton Daly (Hurunui) to the young people
from their district.
