Cycleways a Step Closer to Construction

Waimakariri’s Urban Cycleway Projects are running full steam ahead following the approval of Scheme Design Plans by Council at its meeting on Tuesday 7 March 2017.

School children on bikesThe approval means detailed design of both shared cycle/walkways can start in earnest, and the tender process for constructing the paths is now underway. Construction is anticipated to begin in September, with completion expected in approximately March 2018.

Waimakariri Passchendaele Trustees Neil Price and Ian Thompson, spoke to the Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi and Rangiora-Ashley Community Boards at their December 2016 meetings proposing that the Rangiora-Kaiapoi cycle/walkway be made a centennial memorial to the Battle of Passchendaele.

Following approval from both Community Boards, the Council signed off on the proposal, in memory of the fallen of the First World War battle of Passchendaele.

More information about what Council is planning for walking and cycling across the District can be found in the Action Plan from the recently approved Walking and Cycling Strategy 2017-2022. This plan details projects to be implemented over the next five years.
