Woodend Beach Speed Limits Under Review

Published: 13-Apr-2017

Feedback and discussions with Woodend Beach residents has highlighted a speed issue along Woodend Beach Road and within the settlement itself.

The Woodend Community Association have also raised concerns about the speed limit on Woodend Road.Speeding car

This has prompted Council to propose an 80kim/h speed limit on Woodend Beach Road and a 60km/h speed limit on Sandhill Road, Jelfs Road, Fullers Road and Copper Beech Road.

The average daily traffic on Woodend Beach Road is around 950 vehicles per day, Sandhill 761, Fullers 131 and Jelfs Road 54 vehicles per day.

Woodend Beach Road has a significant number of roadside hazards, including a drainage channel and associated culverts, along with a number of power poles. The narrow lane widths, lack of sealed shoulder and undulations along Woodend Beach Road all point to a lower speed limit being appropriate.

Using the new Speed Management Guide, 80kph is assessed to be a safe and appropriate speed on Woodend Beach Road.

NZTA has recently released their new Speed Management guide, which includes guidance on appropriate speeds for different road environments. The new guide places an increased emphasis on roadside hazards and carriageway widths. It also outlines measures to manage speeds, including the use of speed limits and other treatments and activities.

Feedback is being sought now until 5pm Friday 12 May.
