Weather and River Update for Waimakariri

Published: 06-Apr-2017

There will be consistent rain throughout the day so standard wet weather common sense applies, drive to conditions, expect surface water and ponding on roads.

Ford update: Two Chain Road, Browns Road, Downs Road and Pesters Road fords have reopened.  All other fords in the Waimakariri District are closed until further notice due to high water levels.

The Ashley River is expected to reach approximately mean annual flood flow of 700-800 cumecs at Rangiora. The scheme capacity is over 2,000 cumecs. Tributaries will also be running high.

In the Eyre / Cust / Kaiapoi waterways, we are expecting to see these at elevated levels but no out of river flooding is expected.

Conditions are expected to ease this afternoon and Friday, with mostly fine weather forecast for the weekend.

Council staff will be keeping an eye on the roads and Environment Canterbury will be monitoring flood protection scheme assets throughout the day. We will provide updates if the situation changes.
