South Belt - Southbrook Road Detour

Published: 24-Feb-2017

Work is progressing well on site and contractors are now ready to remove the roundabout island and begin the installation of a new sewer main on Percival Street, from the centre of the intersection heading north towards Matawai Park.

The work will start on Sunday 26 February 2017. Due to the location of the work, and limited space for contractors to work within, a detour will be in place from 2pm. The detour is expected to be in place until 5pm on Wednesday 8 March 2017.

The removal of the roundabout island will be carried out on Sunday 26 February from 3pm until 10pm. The timing has been set at a time of low traffic volumes while minimising night work disruption for residents. The installation of the sewer main will begin on Monday morning once the island has been removed. Once the sewer trench is clear of the intersection it will continue along the centre of the road with a lane of traffic on each side, and a temporary roundabout will be installed in the Southbrook / South Belt intersection. During this phase of the work residents on the eastern side of Percival Street will only be able to turn left out of their driveways (and can utilise the temporary roundabout for turning if they wish to head north).

Traffic impacts

  • There will be no right turn from South Belt into Southbrook Road
  • The suggested detour route for southbound traffic will be via South Belt to Townsend Road and Fernside Road.
  • Traffic heading east on South Belt will be detoured via Percival Street, Newnham Street and Charles Street.
  • During the sewer installation work residents on the eastern side of Percival Street (South Belt to Matawai Park) will only be able to turn left out of their driveways.

Various underground services are being installed as part of the work. This is going to cause disruption to traffic flow through the area. We are urging motorists to use an alternative route where possible to relieve congestion at the intersection, and to allow the contractors to complete the work without delay.

Work completed so far...

  • New kerb and channel and footpaths nearing completion on the eastern side of the road
  • New power ducting installed and underground services have been relocated
  • Ducting for the traffic lights completed on the south-east quadrant
  • New road alongside new kerbs has been constructed and sealing is nearing completion
  • The first signal poles have been installed
