The Waimakariri District Council is one of the largest employers in the Waimakariri District and has become an employer of choice.
A new initiative by the Packaging Forum, manufacturers and shopping outlets has introduced recycling bins that will allow shoppers to take back their used soft plastic bags, wrappers and packaging.
Initially trialled at New World, PAK’n’SAVE and The Warehouse in Auckland, it has now rolled out to include Canterbury and has now hit the Waimakariri District.
The new system will take all soft plastic bags including bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet paper packaging, confectionery and biscuit wrap, chip bags, pasta bags, pasta and rice bags, courier envelopes, shopping bags, sanitary hygiene packaging, newspaper wrap – basically anything made of plastic which can be scrunched into a ball.
Waimakariri District Council’s Solid Waste Asset Manager Kitty Waghorn says “The Council kerbside collection accepts only rigid plastic containers like bottles, yoghurt pottles, margarine tubs and semi-rigid plastics like biscuit trays.
"Supermarket shopping bags are also accepted, but the sorting plant where our kerbside collection plastics are sent can’t process these soft plastics so they can’t be put in the Council kerbside collection. The soft plastics in this new initiative are being sent to Australia to be manufactured into plastic products such as decking, furniture, speed bumps and bollards."
