Public hearings on 'Let's Plan' to be held next week

Published: 31-Mar-2016

Public hearings of formal comments on the Waimakariri District Council’s Preliminary Draft Residential Red Zone Recovery Plan ('Let’s Plan’) begin next Wednesday 6 April and continue until Friday 8 April.

Of the 136 formal comments received during the consultation period for ‘Let’s Plan’, 31 have requested to be heard by the Hearing Panel. The hearings will be held at the Ruataniwha Kaiapoi Civic Centre in Kaiapoi.

In addition to the formal comments, pupils from seven local schools who took part in the consultation will be presenting their views on the morning of Friday 8 April. The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC), as the successor to CERA and now a strategic partner in the process, will be heard on Wednesday 6 April. They will be followed by Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu, who are also a strategic partner. Others who have requested to be heard include the Kaiapoi and Woodend-Ashley Community Boards, the Te Kohaka o Tuhaitara Trust and a large number of local residents.

The Hearing Panel, selected by the Council on the recommendation of Council officers, comprises independent Hearing Commissioner Cindy Robinson as chair, independent consultant Tim Vial, Waimakariri District Mayor David Ayers and Kaiapoi Ward Councillor Neville Atkinson.

Once the Hearing Panel has heard the presentations they will meet again from 11 to 15 April to consider what recommendations they should make to the Council – the Council will meet in May to decide whether to adopt those recommendations or not.
