This section gives information on the Council's drainage systems and areas, and ways you can help to care for our waterways.
Sewage Discharges to Waterways
The Council's sewerage system is
generally functioning satisfactorily within the District, following the
recent earthquakes. However, the sewerage infrastructure in Kaiapoi,
Pines and Kairaki Beach is very fragile and the Council is continually
making repairs to minimise any risk of sewer overflows.
In periods of
high rainfall, especially where flooding can occur, there is a
likelihood that some sewage may enter the waterways, especially in
Kaiapoi and Pines Beach. Our last sewage discharge was into the Kaiapoi
River on 18 August 2011.
