Water Restrictions in the Waimakariri District

Care with water usage in hot weather advised - updated 1 February 2013

Waimakariri District Council is asking the District’s residents to significantly reduce their water usage immediately and while the warmer weather continues. Three Waters Manager Kalley Simpson says that continuous extreme temperatures coupled with the ensuing high fire risk and much more water traditionally used in the garden in these conditions, combine to create a serious situation. “We’re asking residents to be aware of the possible increased  need for water in case of fire outbreak”, he says. “While the weather continues to be warm and dry, the water situation needs to be monitored very closely”.

At this stage there are no water restrictions in place although, if usage is not curtailed and the hot, dry conditions continue, District wide water restrictions may become necessary.

At times some of the Council’s water supply schemes will be required to conserve water for short periods of time or on a long term basis. The Council has provided information on how to cope with living with a restricted water supply (pdf, 163 kB)

Levels of Restrictions

The Council has three levels of restrictions:

Level 1

Properties with a street address that ends with an odd number may only water gardens and lawns when the day of the month is an odd number. For example, a property with a street number of 21 can only water gardens and lawns when the date is an odd number, such as 1st, 3rd, 5th of the month, etc.

Properties with a street address that ends with an even number may only water gardens and lawns when the day of the month is an even number.

Level 2

The use of automated watering systems is prohibited at all times. This includes rotary, pop-up, dripper, or other types of watering systems. Hand-held hoses may only be used for watering of gardens.

Level 3

There is a complete ban on all watering systems. Water may only be used for domestic purposes such as drinking and washing and to provide drinking water for stock.
