This
plan covers the area of both solid and hazardous waste. It
does not cover liquid waste, which may be included in a future
review.
The minimisation of solid and
hazardous wastes in this district both relies on and affects
everyone, so everyone in the district is encouraged to read
the plan and support the Council's vision "to eliminate
the impact of solid and hazardous waste on the social and
biophysical environment".
The plan will provide a framework
for ensuring a consistent pathway to maximising diversion
from disposal that has been agreed by our community, and
committed to by our Council.
The waste reduction targets
that we have set in the plan are:
to reduce the weight of Council-controlled
waste to landfill (Based on 1999 figures for annual waste
weight per head of population) by:
- 10% prior to June 2005
- 30% prior to June 2010
- 50% prior to June 2020
while also considering the full implementation of Zero Waste (100% of 1999
levels) by June 2030.
| The key principals used
to guide our waste management approaches are the minimisation
priorities - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover and (Safe)
Residual Disposal. |
 |
Each of the minimisation priorities
has an objective, with strategies to
realise these objectives, in order for the district to meet
the waste reduction targets. We have included implementation
methods, to show how the Council can achieve the strategies. The
list is not all-inclusive, and we welcome suggestions on
other methods that could be used to reduce waste throughout
the district.
Progress towards meeting the
targets and implementation methods in the Plan will be monitored
annually. The Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
Plan itself will be reviewed on a 3 yearly cycle, and the
community will be consulted with as part of the review process.
