Collecting
Baseline Data: Doing a Walk-through It
is essential that you collect baseline data before starting
the project. Only by establishing a baseline
are you able to determine the success of your waste reduction
efforts. You will also be able to use the data to raise
awareness of waste management and to gain support for
the project.
It is recommended that you follow these four steps to
collect that baseline data.
1. Collect information on existing waste and recycling
systems
(See
Worksheet 1: Existing
Waste and Recycling Services)
2. Collect data on paper use (per person) per month/year
3. Conduct a waste audit before a recycling system is
put into place (Conducting
a Waste Audit).
4. Undertake a ‘walk-through’ to identify
opportunities for improvement (See the Doing
a Walk-Through Guide). Use Worksheet 2: “Walk-Through” to
make notes as you carry out your walk-through.

Once you have your baseline data, it is time to look
at establishing an internal
recycling system for paper
and cardboard.
