The Council provides a number of waste services for the District's residents, businesses, schools and visitors:
-
A
weekly kerbside refuse bag and fortnightly recycling wheelie bin
collection service is provided to approximately 75% of the District’s
households.
-
Waste disposal, diversion and recycling services
are available at our transfer stations - Southbrook operates seven days
a week, and Oxford is open two days each week.
-
Operation of a
cleanfill disposal site - access to this site is limited to companies
registered with the Council to ensure only compliant cleanfill is
deposited here.
Waste Management Plan
The Council adopted their Waste Management
Plan in 2009, and this includes the following actions in order to
divert more waste from landfill:
-
Construction and operation
of a Resource Recovery Park (expanding the recycling area and providing
re-use facilities) at the Southbrook Transfer Station site. The Southbrook Resource Recovery Park opened on 14 September 2011.
-
Providing a
waste minimisation information and education programme to businesses,
households and schools, so as to reduce quantities of waste being sent
to landfill.
-
Facilitating safe hazardous waste disposal through providing a means for disposing of household hazardous waste free of charge.
-
Encouraging home composting by selling compost bins and EM Bokashi kits at cost.
Closed Landfill Sites in District
The
Waimakariri District does not have any operating landfills, although
the Council manages five closed landfill sites at Rangiora, Kaiapoi,
Oxford, Mandeville and Cust. Residual waste is sent to the regional
landfill at Kate Valley in the Hurunui District.
Other wastes are disposed of as follows:
-
Green garden waste is transported to out-of-District composting facilities.
-
Kerbside recycling is sent to the Eco Central Ltd MRF in Christchurch.
-
Other diverted waste is sent to appropriate facilities for recycling, processing or treatment.
