The Waimakariri District contains many stunning opportunities for its residents to enjoy their natural scenery on foot or by bike.
Opportunities include walking or biking along stopbanks and riverside trails, walking along the beaches, enjoying views of the snow-covered Alps in winter on foot or bicycle, or trekking through native forest in the foothills near Oxford. Walking and cycling provide many significant health, recreation, social and environmental benefits to our residents.
Council's Walking and Cycling Strategy / Implementation Plan
The Council’s 2010 Walking and Cycling Strategy and Implementation Plan provides a basis for identifying and prioritising demand for new or improved walking and cycling opportunities within the District. Maintaining and increasing opportunities to walk and cycle is of key importance to the District, as these opportunities enhance not only our enjoyment of our towns and rural areas, but also provide other substantial health, social and environmental benefits to our communities.
This Strategy also includes some information on horse riding in the District, outlining the issues that riders experience in finding safe areas to ride, and highlights opportunities for future improvement to these facilities.
The final Walking and Cycling Strategy was adopted by Council on 3 May 2011.
