Transport Strategy

The Waimakariri District Council promotes a sustainable transport system through integrated planning.

Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy

The Waimakariri District Council is a partner to the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy (UDS).

The strategy provides the primary strategic direction for the Greater Christchurch area, including the location of future housing, development of social and retail activity centres, areas for new employment and integration with transport networks. It also establishes a basis for all organisations, not just the Strategy partners, and the community to work collaboratively to manage growth.

The UDS provides the direction for transport planning in the Waimakariri District. The approach being used is designed to:

  • Integrate land use planning with transport planning to develop a sustainable transport network without the need to invest heavily in building expensive new roads
  • Make better use of the existing network
  • Provide more employment in the District to minimise peak time travel
  • Maximise the use of the public passenger transport system
  • Provide facilities close to residential areas to promote walking and cycling.

Structure plans are being developed for the proposed growth areas in Rangiora, Kaiapoi and Woodend and these structure plans aim to develop sustainable transport networks. They show the key transport and road linkages.

Key transport and roading projects are included in the Council's Ten Year Plan.
