Road Safety in our District
A number of key partners are involved in road safety in the Waimakariri. These include the Council, New Zealand Police, New Zealand Transport Agency, ACC and Environment Canterbury. In addition there are also a number of other agencies, groups and individuals who regularly work with the Council. These parties form the Waimakariri Road Safety Committee; the committee meets every two months to discuss road safety issues.
The work of the committee is based on the Government's Road Safety Strategy 'Safer Journeys - a safe road system increasingly free of death and serious injury'. It has developed its own road safety strategy which takes a safer systems approach to road safety, covering areas as safe roads and roadsides, safe speeds, safe vehicles and safe road use. This approach means working across all elements of the road system (roads, speeds, vehicles and road use) and recognises that everybody has responsibility for road safety.
