Types of Liquor Licencesprint

A licence is issued to a named person, company or legal entity in relation to a premises or conveyance. Conveyances are vehicles such as aircraft, vessels and trains. A licence cannot be transferred from one person to another, or from one premises or conveyance to another.

What Type of Licence do you Need?

The type of activity or business you have will determine the type of liquor licence you will need.

Description of the activity of business Type of licence required
For the sale and supply of alcohol on the premises and includes:
  • Restaurants
  • Taverns
  • Cafes
  • Bars and brasseries
  • Wine bars
  • Hotels
  • Entertainment centres (i.e. ten pin bowling centres)
  • Winery.

On Licence
If you wish to sell liquor that is to be consumed at your business, you are required to apply for an On Licence.

This includes premises or conveyances (boats / buses) that serve drinks and provide corkage / glasses.
Premises that only provide corkage / glasses (BYO only). Endorsed On Licence
If you wish to allow the consumption of liquor by persons who have brought the liquor to the premises, and are there for the purposes of dining, you are required to apply for an Endorsed On Licence (Premises that only provide corkage / glasses – BYO only).
For the sale and supply of alcohol for consumption off the premises and includes:
  • Bottle shops
  • Supermarkets / superettes
  • Mail order
  • Catering business
  • Wine shops
  • Auctioneers.
Off Licence
If you wish to sell liquor that is not consumed at your premises, you are required to apply for an Off Licence (premises that sell alcohol but do not serve it).

 

Endorsed Off Licence
If you are a caterer, and wish to sell or supply liquor for functions or events, you are required to apply for an Endorsed Off Licence.
Occasion, event or series of occasions:
  • Weddings
  • 21st birthdays
  • Sports games
  • Fund-raising events etc.
Special Licence
If you wish to sell and supply liquor for event/s held at an unlicensed premises (including local halls, parks or sports ground) or On Licensed premises (including sports clubs) attended by non-members, or outside licensed hours, you may need a Special Licence.
For sale and supply of alcohol on club premises to members, their guests and members of clubs with reciprocal rights and includes:
  • Sports clubs
  • Chartered clubs
  • Social clubs.
Club Licence
If you wish to sell liquor as an Incorporated Chartered or Sports Club, you are required to apply for a Club Licence.
To continue trading on existing licence when a business is purchased. Temporary Authority
If you are thinking of purchasing a business that includes the use of an existing liquor licence, you will need a temporary authority (allows the holders to operate the business while their own On or Off Licence is being processed).
Winemakers are no longer required to hold a licence under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989. Winemakers are now dealt with under the Wine Act 2003.
