The Council's Building Unit is responsible for administering the Building Act and checking that your plans and specifications comply with
the New Zealand Building Code.
For detailed information on all aspects of applying for your consent
browse the pages below.
For specific information about common building projects go to the 'I want to build a ...' page. To find out what inspections you need and how to get a code compliance certificate go to the 'Building Inspections and Code Compliance' page.
Note: Due to changes to the Building Act 2004 taking effect from 1 March 2012, the Council is no longer able to accept a building consent application for a residential building (restricted building work) without a designer statement from a licensed building practitioner. Please ensure you have this available to ensure that your building consent application can be processed without undue delay.
