Draft Rural Residential Development Plan

As more and more people move into the rural areas of the Waimakariri District so we need to determine how best to handle this in the future. This is the purpose of the Rural Residential Development Plan.

The Waimakariri District Council has identified preferred locations for future residential development within the eastern Waimakariri District. The selection of these particular areas is based on current rural residential growth and development patterns, likely growth and development patterns in the future (in line with the predictions of the Greater Christchurch Urban Development Strategy) and the effective provision of reticulated services to support future residential developments.

We’ve identified eight preferred locations for rural residential development over the next thirty five years:

Mandeville North Ohoka
Waikuku South East Rangiora
Tuahiwi South East Woodend
Fernside North Kaiapoi

For the purposes of this plan the locations are intended to be a guide only – a starting point, open for consultation and discussion.

It is intended that the Development Plan will outline appropriate locations for rural residential development within the eastern district.

We’ll be holding a series of information evenings, seeking submissions on the proposals, making available to you a summary of those submissions, considering the implications of submissions, conducting hearings for those people who want to present their submissions in person and then report to the elected Council members on the hearing panel recommendations.

The elected members will then make decisions on the proposals.
