Pergola

Do I need a building consent?

A building consent is not required for a pergola of any size as long as there is no roofing or cladding attached to it. Pergolas may be attached to a building or stand-alone.

If a roof is to be fitted, then it is no longer considered to be a pergola. It may now be a veranda or porch.

A building consent is required prior to building a veranda or porch that is over 20 square metres in size.

What information is needed?

Specific information to include in a building consent application for a veranda or porch:

  • Timber or steel framing member details and treatment
  • Footing details
  • Connection details including connection to dwelling if needed
  • Roofing and flashing details
  • Stormwater disposal details.

Note: Using a qualified draughtsperson or architect should lead to reduced processing times and costs.
