The bookshop on Jacaranda Street – Marlish Glome
A book full of dysfunctional people who, in the end, manage to get their lives on an even path. A mixture of quite sophisticated black comedy and naïve romanticism. The ending smacks of the romances the main character professes to detest. However an enjoyable read.

Flying Troutmans – Miriam Toews
Reminiscent of “Little Miss Sunshine” this rollicking book is the story of an aunt taking her eccentric niece and nephew on a trip from Canada to California in an old van to search for their long lost father, when their mother has a severe mental health crisis. Toews is a graphic writer, who can keep you fully engaged.

The heir – Vita Sackville-West
A reprint of a novella written in 1921 – 22. A bit dated in some aspects, but a delightful read. Sackville-West’s drawing of people, their characteristics, reactions to events and development is acerbic and right on the nail. It can be read at a single sitting.
