Professional Weavers Network of New Zealand
'A Common Thread'
contemporary handwoven textiles for the modern interior

Twenty weavers from throughout New Zealand exhibit the best of current New Zealand handweaving with a focus on presenting modern interior concepts and design utilising colour, texture, pattern and innovative weaving techniques.
The weavers were presented with a challenge to create ‘handwoven pieces that can enhance the interior furnishings and decor of contemporary homes.’ The exhibition guidelines to members suggested that the weavers consider a wide range of potential art
pieces including: screens, curtain material, cushions, tablecloths, sofa throws, antimacassars, floor rugs or small carpets, upholstery fabric or chair covers as well as general household textiles such as lampshades, tapestries, wall hangings and even small sculptural pieces. Members could choose to work together on some items such as placemats, table runners or table covers in order to create a table setting of note.
The Professional Weavers Network of New Zealand (PWN) was formed in 1991 by a group of dedicated weavers. Network members come from around New Zealand, with most working from home-based studios. Many exhibit their work in their own exhibitions in New Zealand and overseas and several have an international reputation.
The PWN is an active group, providing a stimulating and exciting environment for members. The Network aims to make sure art textiles are promoted and recognised as a vibrant, exciting and high quality contemporary art form and provides opportunities for weavers to share knowledge, expertise and new developments within weaving and the fibre arts.
Mounting exhibitions has become a major activity for the PWN. ‘A Common Thread’ is their seventh exhibition and is being shown in Palmerston North, Rangiora and Timaru. The exhibition is supported by the D A Lewis company, who have provided furniture to help set off some of the displays. A previous Network exhibition, ‘Black/White – A Journey through Contrast’ was shown in the Chamber Gallery in 2005.
