Learn about Anzac Day and Get Involved

Anzac Day commemorates the 1915 landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers in Gallipoli. This began one of the most devastating episodes in New Zealand history.

The campaign lasted 260 days during which over 7000 New Zealand soldiers were wounded, 2,721 fatally. Australia suffered over 8000 fatalities. This shared loss bought our two nations together and is an integral part of ANZAC commemorations today.

The first Anzac Day took place on 25 April 1916. As time went on, the ceremony of remembrance was extended to the soldiers of World War II (WWII), and it now honours all New Zealanders and Australians who have served in a military campaign.

Waimakariri- Zonnebeke - Commemorative Partnership

In 2007 a twinning relationship was formed between Waimakariri and the Zonnebeke – Passchendaele district of Belgium, where 200 soldiers from North Canterbury fought.

A delegation from Waimakariri visited Belgium for the 90th commemoration of the battle in October 2007 where they were presented with one of 10 sets of original prints created by students at the artists’ academy in Atterbeek, Brussels to commemorate the battle.

This year Waimakariri will host a delegation from Belgium including councillors from Zonnebeke and the curator of the Zonnebeke war museum. Here to support the Passchendaele exhibition currently touring New Zealand, they will also attend local Anzac Day services in Waimakariri.
