Frequently Asked Questionsprint

Am I allowed to have a fire in a brazier, chiminea or outdoor fireplace during a fire ban?

A fire in a brazier is deemed to be an open fire and is therefore not permitted in a prohibited fire season.  In a restricted fire season a fire permit is required to light a brazier. Gas braziers are deemed to be a gas barbecue and are allowed.

Outdoor burning in residential-zoned areas or close to sensitive areas is banned all year round unless a resource consent to burn is obtained from Environment Canterbury.

If your property is located in Clean Air Zone 2 surrounding Rangiora or Kaiapoi you may not light a fire outdoors without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury between 1 May and 30 September.
